While dog groomers offer a full suite of services, including nail clipping and ear cleaning, it's possible—with a little practice in the basics—to handle some grooming tasks at home. It begins with maintenance tasks like brushing their coat and bathing, but you can also tackle simple haircuts with the right dog grooming kit—especially handy for breeds with continuously growing hair, like poodles, who typically need their hair cut once a month or so.
We evaluated a wide range of dog grooming kits for their maneuverability, battery life, ease-of-use, and noisiness, and found the kits that will work best for your breed and budget.
Here are the best dog grooming kits.
Best Overall: oneisall Cordless Dog Grooming Kit
The centerpiece of this grooming kit is its excellent cordless clippers, which have a long-lasting battery, two different speed settings, and reasonably quiet operation, so you can trim your dog's hair without freaking them out too much. But the oneisall Cordless Dog Grooming Kit also comes with a robust selection of accessories, including a metal grooming comb, scissors, and a cleaning brush. It also comes with six clipper guards in total, ranging from 3 to 18 millimeters, allowing haircuts from approximately 1/8-inch to 3/4-inch in length (beginners should stick to longer lengths).
The battery life is particularly convenient, enabling at-home groomers to work for up to 150 minutes on a single charge, so there's no need to rush trimmings. The clippers have several bright LED indicator lights that count down battery percentage, so you'll know exactly when it's time to plug the oneisall back in to its included charger.
The oneisall dog clippers and grooming kit is even available in five different colors.
Best Basic: Sminiker Professional Pet Hair Clippers with Comb Guides
This dog grooming kit comes with just about everything you’ll need to give your pooch a DIY salon day, all for an extremely reasonable price. The hair clippers alone are worth the price of the kit, combining a titanium acute-angle blade with a ceramic movable blade for trimming that’s both fast and smooth.
Along with a rechargeable clipper, the set includes four comb guides, nail clippers, and a file, and stainless steel scissors for trimming your pooch's more delicate areas.
Best High-End: Shark Fin Deluxe Dog Shear Grooming Kit
Particularly when shopping for shears, fit is paramount: if they're too tight or too loose, you could end up with a tired wrist and an uneven cut.
Luckily, this set of three shears includes everything you need to nail all types of haircuts with precision and ease. The scissors' patented handle is designed to encourage proper hand posture. Depending on your needs, you'll have the choice of a straight, curved, or 50-teeth model—each hand-welded out of a sturdy, high-quality Japanese steel. Choose from three different sizes, and then customize the fit further with the included sets of rings.
Best for Small Dogs: Pet Union Professional Dog Grooming Kit
These cordless clippers feature an ergonomic design that makes it easy to seamlessly trim even the smallest pup’s hard-to-reach areas. Whatever they can’t reach, you can trim with the included scissors and stainless steel comb—and there are thinning shears, too, perfect for dogs with light to medium coats. The kit also includes four comb attachments and oil to keep the clippers running smoothly, plus a nail cutter and nail file.
Best for Thick Coats: Holdog Dog Grooming Tools
This innovative cutter head has 33 teeth—more than the traditional 24—and its titanium-ceramic blade cuts through even the densest coats (yes, that includes double-coated dogs like Newfoundlands and Pomeranians). That’s in addition to a three-speed rotary motor for extra power and four clipping combs to help you get just the right closeness. The rechargeable clippers can hold a charge for up to four hours, which is plenty of time for you to fully groom a small or medium-size dog. The kit also comes with a pair of stainless steel scissors and a stainless steel comb.
Best for Beginners: ConairPRO Puppy Grooming Starter Kit
Congrats on your new bundle of fur! Puppies need help with their basic grooming needs. This kit from Conair—yep, the same brand that makes blow dryers for people—contains everything you need to get started, including a small pin brush, slicker brush, and boar bristle brush, plus a nail clipper for those surprisingly sharp puppy nails.
You’ll also find a heart-shaped plush squeaky toy, which is perfect for distracting pups who are new to getting groomed. Everything comes packaged in a cute, paw-printed carrying bag (so you won't mind leaving it out in the bathroom!).
Best for Poodles: Wahl Pro Series Cordless Animal Clippers
Poodles' thick, curly coats require a strong, powerful motor. One and a half times more powerful than most, the heavy-duty lithium powered one on this Wahl 9766 model is fit for the task. With self-sharpening, snag-free blades, you’ll never have to worry that you’re cutting with a dull blade. Another major plus is that it can hold a charge for up to two hours, and offers a 15-minute charge for quick touch-ups.
The kit comes with four comb guides, a dog comb, scissors, charging cord, and carrying case. In addition to poodles, these made-in-the-USA clippers also work well on collies and shepherds.
Best for Dogs and Cats: Ceenwes Dog Grooming Kit
Do you have more than one type of four-legged friend in your house? The products in this kit work just as well for grooming cats as they do for dogs—and can even be used on bunnies and horses (just make sure to clean your tools in between uses).
The kit comes with a rechargeable clipper and power adapter, plus scissors, nail clippers, and all the comb attachments you’ll need, and a brush to keep the trimmers clean. The clippers also don’t get louder than 60 decibels—no louder than a typical conversation—which can help to keep animals of every stripe calm.
For a versatile, all-in-one kit, we recommend the oneisall Cordless Dog Grooming Kit. With two speed settings and a 2.5 hour battery life, it's great for all dog sizes and breeds. For those who are new to at-home grooming and don't need electric clippers, the ConairPRO Puppy Grooming Starter Kit has a variety of useful tools.
What to Look for in Dog Grooming Kits
Different dog grooming kits come with different tools, so choose a kit that fits your needs. Some dog grooming kits contain just the basics, including various brushes, combs and nail clippers. Other dog grooming kits contain all the tools you need to cut your dog’s hair, including electric clippers, clipper comb attachments and shears (scissors for cutting hair).
Professional dog groomers spend a lot of money on high-end equipment that can handle rigorous daily use. Although high-end dog grooming kits also work great for pet owners, it may not be necessary to spend that much for your first dog grooming kit, especially if you are only grooming your own dog.
Can you use a human grooming kit on dogs?
It’s best to use a pet-specific grooming kit on your dog rather than a grooming kit for humans. Pet-specific clipper blades are designed specifically handle dog fur rather than human hair. Dogs (and cats) have very thin, sensitive skin that you may accidentally cut if you’re not using the right clippers. Additionally, human clippers are not designed to be used for as long a time as dog clippers, and they may be louder.
Do dog grooming kits work for all breeds?
Many dog grooming kits contain all the tools you need to groom almost any breed of dog, including electric clippers, clipper comb attachments and shears (scissors for cutting hair). Some dog grooming kits also include brushes combs and nail clippers. For dogs that don’t need their hair cut, look for dog grooming kits that include brushes, combs and nail clippers, but not clippers or shears.
