A good poop bag holder is essential when you take your pup out for a walk. It keeps your hands free to manage your dog and your leash and makes for a better outing.

“Your dog may poop more than once on their walk. If you only brought one bag, you would either have to be ‘that person’ who leaves it, or figure out a way to reuse your only bag without making a mess,” says Brittany Mahurin, a professional dog walker in Nashville who has worked with animals for 15 years.

“And you want to be able to easily access the bags without having to fumble around much and get your best friend back to their much-deserved walk! With an excited pup trying to get back to their walk, it can make it a bit difficult to have to try to mess around with a crappy bag holder. Pun intended.”

We looked at dozens of holders, considering their size, materials, capacity, extra features, and how easy they are to use. Our favorite overall pick is the Kurgo Duty Bag. It easily attaches to a flat or rope leash and has an extra hook for full poop bags. Plus, it’s machine washable.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Kurgo Duty Bag Dog Poop Bag Dispenser

Kurgo Duty Bag Dog Poop Bag Dispenser

What We Like
  • Attaches to flat or rope leash

  • Machine-washable

  • Has extra hook for used poop bags

What We Don't Like
  • Velcro straps can sometimes stick to clothes

  • Can slide around on very thin leashes

While some bag dispensers dangle awkwardly from a leash or have to be worn around your waist, this colorful Kurgo Duty Bag slides on the leash and lies relatively flat. There’s a hook on the top and Velcro straps that keep it from sliding and it’s designed to attach to nearly any leash—whether it’s round rope, thick leather, or flat nylon. It can hang more loosely on very thin leashes, but if you attach it to the loop handle of the leash, that should prevent it from shimmying down and out of place.

There’s room for a standard-size roll of poop bags in the zippered pouch. But if you don’t want to deal with tearing them off when you are in the middle of a pickup, then you can also stuff in a bunch of loose bags. The Kurgo comes with a roll of 15 to get you started.

And when you pick up a bag, there’s a metal hook on the bottom for hanging full bags. It’s bright red so you always know it’s there. There’s also a reflective strip to help with visibility on early morning, late night, or foggy walks. And if it ever gets grimy, just pop it in the washer.

Earth Rated Dog Poop Bag Holder

Earth Rated Dog Poop Bag Holder

What We Like
  • Hook for used bags

  • Inexpensive

  • Double attachments keep roll in place

What We Don't Like
  • Can have difficulties if roll doesn’t have a center cardboard core

This simple egg-shaped holder has a sturdy hook that latches on to the handle of any leash. Twist off the bottom to add a standard roll of poop bags. There are pins on the top and bottom to keep the bags twirling and the roll from falling out. Then twist it together and lock it back in place.

Once you’ve picked up a mess, there’s an extra hook on the back to easily carry used bags. This inexpensive holder fits all standard rolls of bags, but because of the pins, it works best with rolls of bags that have a cardboard core in the center.

Fable Waste Bag Holder

What We Like
  • Double attachment keeps it from swinging

  • Five colors

  • Stylish

What We Don't Like
  • More expensive than most

  • No hook for full bags

This sleek and stylish waste bag holder from Fable has a silicone loop that you can hook around your leash or a belt loop and a clasp that holds it firmly against your leash. The double attachment keeps the holder from swinging around while you walk. The holder has a twist-cap top and anti-spin mechanisms to keep rolls secure inside.

It fits any standard-sized roll, but there’s a little nub that helps separate Fable-brand bags when they unroll. Fable says that feature works best with their own brand bags. The holder comes in five muted colors and can be wiped down with a damp cloth.

What To Look For in Dog Poop Dispensers

Poop bag holders can be made of hard or soft plastic, nylon, canvas, or other materials. The hard plastic holders than clip on a leash are typically less expensive and waterproof. Mahurin, however, prefers holders made of a heavier oxford fabric.

“These stay clean and dry fairly easily. You don’t have to worry about them scratching or breaking like the plastic ones,” Brittany Mahurin told The Spruce Pets.

Ease of Use

It can be frustrating when your dog does their business and you struggle to get a bag to scoop it up. Some holders more easily dispense a bag at a time, while others don’t hold the roll in place very well and you have to go hunting for a bag.

Mahurin uses a fanny pack type of holder with a small hole that makes it easy to get just one bag at a time with very little effort. “If you are someone who takes a lot of walks or hikes with your dog, you don’t want to run out of bags and you want something that will make it simple to get to them,” she says

Most holders have room for at least one standard-sized roll of bags. Others are larger and have space for a second roll and sometimes extras like keys, cash, your phone, and maybe even a water bottle. Of course with extra storage comes a bulkier bag.

One particularly handy extra is a hook or pocket to store full poop bags. That way you don’t have to carry them in your hand. Other bags have hooks for keys or extra pockets for walking essentials.

  • What is the best way to pick up dog poop?

Most people prefer the inside-out method when picking up poop.

“I have picked up poop the same way for as long as I can remember!” says Mahurin. “I put the poop bag over my hand like a glove, pick up what I can, turn the bag inside out over my hand, then tie it up. I have learned that if the pile is too big for my hand, just use a second bag. It’s not worth getting it on you just to use one bag!”

  • How do you refill a dog poop bag dispenser?

It depends on the holder. Some have tops that twist off, where you can replace an empty roll. Others have compartments that hold a roll with bags being fed out of a hole or slit.

  • How do you attach a dog poop bag dispenser to a leash?

Holders typically have a carabiner, hook, or Velcro straps to attach to a leash. It’s often easier to connect them to the handle so they don’t slide down and bump your pup. Some people don’t like to have a swinging holder the whole time they’re walking.

“I’m not a huge fan of the dispensers dangling from the leash,” says Mahurin. “I tend to hold it in my hand with the loop of the leash if it’s already on a client’s leash.”

  • What are the best dog poop bags made of?

“I’ve had far too many bags rip open on me while trying to pick up poop! So I am pretty picky about the type I use,” Mahurin says. She uses thick, leak-proof bags that are standard size. She says she prefers bags without handles because she’s had handles get poop on them, and then she’s not able to tie them up.

Many people prefer to use compostable bags because they break down more quickly in the environment. Mahurin says that unfortunately, she’s found these rip more easily than others. She also says there’s really no reason to get a scented bag. “Poop is going to smell like poop no matter what,” she points out.
