The Bachelor alum Lauren Bushnell Lane and her husband, country music artist Chris Lane, spoke to The Spruce Pets about their family’s reckoning with pet obesity, and the steps they took to get their two dogs to a healthy weight.
“We did not know dog obesity would ever be a topic of conversation in our lives until we went to the vet with our two dogs and Chloe was overweight,” Lane said. “As parents to two toddlers, Dutton and Baker, and two dogs, Chloe and Cooper, we were a little intimidated by the process of getting our dog to a healthy weight, but it was really as simple as changing her food.”
Now, the Nashville-based couple is teaming up with Hill’s Pet Nutrition to educate other pet owners about how to recognize when pets are overweight, and how to make sure they live their longest, happiest, healthiest lives.
“We want to indulge our dogs a little bit, we love them so much,” Chris said. But the concerned paw-rents took the news of Chloe’s weight gain seriously. “We didn’t know that a little bit of weight, like even two pounds, could have such a negative effect on your dog’s health.”
The Lanes know first-hand how difficult it can be to resist the urge to give your dog a few extra nibbles throughout the day, whether it’s a toddler tossing a scrap of food from the dinner table or those big puppy eyes asking for a treat.
Obesity in dogs can lead to serious secondary health conditions including diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.
“We didn’t want it to start impacting her health and we want her to live a long healthy life,” Lauren said.
Fortunately, some of these ailments can be remedied by bringing your dog back to their ideal weight. It’s different for every dog, so the first step is always a visit with your veterinarian–which you should do annually to monitor any changes in your dog’s weight. From there you can follow in the footsteps of the Lanes to help your dog drop the extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight with nutritionally balanced meals, exercise, and quality time together.
Hill's Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight Chicken Recipe Dry Dog Food
“With Hill’s Science Diet Perfect Weight dog food didn’t have to cut Chloe’s food at all so she didn’t feel deprived,” shared proud paw-ther Chris Lane. “We ended up feeding both dogs the same food. They love it!”
Hill’s Science Diet Perfect Weight Dry Dog Food is made with real animal protein first. The formula is rich in fiber to help dogs feel full, and added nutrients, like L-carnitine and coconut oil. PetSafe Nylon Leash
“Our dogs love going on walks and it’s a way to express your love for them without food,” declared Lauren with Chris in agreement. “And if we could give one item to all dog parents it would be a leash.”
We here at The Spruce Pets like the PetSafe Nylon Leash, because it's lightweight, comes in a variety of colors, and the streamlined design won’t weigh you down. It’s made of durable nylon and the hook at the end is easily attached and unattached to a D-ring on a collar or a harness.
Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Sports Golf Ball Chew Toy
“Both of them are so interested in playing fetch at their dog camp but not at home," Chris said, sounding perplexed. The Lane dogs attend a doggie daycare in Nashville that picks up dogs in a van named ‘The Doggone Bus.’ If anyone in their household mentions the daycare the dogs immediately get excited. At home Chloe and Cooper are interested in Chris’s putting green, chasing the golf ball back and forth.
Have we got the perfect toy for them.
The Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Sports Golf Ball Chew Toy is sized and shaped to resemble a golf ball. It’s hollow inside and can be filled with the occasional treat. Unlike a golf ball, it’s bouncy and buoyant to encourage your dog to play. It’s also free of BPA, phthalate, and lead and is made in the United States.
EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness
“The dogs love going in the truck so much that I can’t even mention it in front of them,” whispered Chris. Before kids and Chloe, the couple would explore different cities while on tour by taking Cooper to a new dog park. These days, both dogs love tagging along in the car and then exploring their destination.
We recommend the EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness, which enables you to secure your dog with a standard car seatbelt.
The EzyDog harness was independently crash-tested and certified by Automotive Safety Engineering in Australia. It also surpasses the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that the Department of Transportation established for child-restraint systems. It’s available in three sizes and can be adjusted to fit your dog’s unique shape. It can also be attached to a leash via a D-ring for a secure and comfortable walk.
