If you're a casual aquarium hobbyist, you likely refer to fish by their common names, but if you want to learn more about the fish, you need to know its Latin scientific name. Some common names and scientific names may be the same (tetras and bettas), but sometimes the names are far off. The following list features fish with common names starting with G.

Garbei Cory

Corydoras garbei. This type of catfish is found in the slow-moving rivers in South America. Most cory catfish are small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling scavengers that prefer to live in a group. These fish will help keep your tank clean. If you have other species in the tank, they should also be similar-sized peaceful fish.

Golden Zebra Loach

Botia robusta. This catfish named for its black and white stripes is native to Asia. The peaceful zebra loach is also sometimes called the candy stripe loach. Zebra loaches are peaceful, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish that are usually a good choice for a beginner aquarium hobbyist. They can tolerate smaller tanks. The loach's signature look is its blunt head with three pairs of barbells.

Goldfish

Carassius auratus is a small domesticated member of the carp family native to China. Goldfish are one of the most popular breeds of pet fish. It's a hardy fish, able to tolerate temperature fluctuations. This gregarious species lives peacefully with similar size fish. Goldfish are not only gold; they also can come in white, tan, orange, and brown colors.

Guppy

Poecilia reticulata is one of the most popular pet fish and is a native of northern South America. Guppies species have a wide variety of colors, all featuring beautiful fan-like tail fins. This live-bearers species procreates easily in captivity. Another peaceful fish, this freshwater creature gets along with other peaceful fish, including tetras, mollies, and zebrafish.
