Experience
Melissa's veterinary career began with a stint at an emergency veterinary hospital located on Purdue West Central's campus. Spending her evenings working as a veterinary assistant, she gained valuable knowledge and the experience necessary to apply to Purdue's veterinary technology program.
Upon graduation, she was hired at a small animal practice in a rural town and quickly took over the role of head technician, overseeing the training and management of the practice's support staff. Excellent at client communication, she developed educational handouts on various diseases, home care, and training techniques to help pet owners better care for their companions. Melissa's other clinical passions include behavior modification, environmental enrichment, senior pet care, nutrition, and anesthesia and pain management.
Excited to branch out from general practice, Melissa honed her writing skills by collaborating with Rumpus Writing and Editing since 2018. Her experience in client communication was invaluable as she created blog posts and informative articles for various veterinary practices, IDEXX, Trupanion, and AAHA.
Education
Melissa underwent four years of schooling to obtain her Bachelor's degree from Purdue University in Veterinary Technology. After passing the National Veterinary Technician Exam in 2011, she completed her education later that year to become a fully registered veterinary technologist in the state of Indiana.
As a believer in fear-free and low-stress handling to provide better veterinary care to her patients, she completed Sophia Yin's Low Stress Handling Course and has achieved her Silver Certification.
Over a two-year period, Melissa must complete 16 hours of continuing education to remain current on medical advancements to continue to provide the most updated, highest quality care for pets.
