Hedgehogs are very quiet creatures, though they do make heavy breathing noises--a kind of snuffling sound. They will also grunt when excited or upset. On rare occasions you might catch them making a soft chirp.

Hedgehogs basically like to eat and run and they are not interested in playing or cuddling with you. If you're looking for a pet that enjoys interaction, this might not be the one for you. In addition, they will bite and possess sharp teeth and will bite.

When they are distressed or upset they will huff and puff, and if you ignore this warning sign, they will bite. Even if a hedgehog knows has learned that you are trustworthy, it may still bite you unpredictably.

Hedgehogs don't boast a long lifespan--just three to five years. They're also prone to Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome which is related to multiple sclerosis. The disease, likely hereditary, is prominent in domesticated hedgehogs though it doesn't occur significantly in the wild. Hedgehogs will first show signs of losing muscle control and seem to wobble when they stand up. Loss of muscle control increases over time and eventually the animal is not able to stand or move. There is no cure for the disease though a diet high in vitamin E has can mask its effects though it doesn't actually slow the progression.

It's illegal to own a hedgehog in a handful of states including California and Georgia as well as certain cities like New York.

Other states, including Arizona, Maine, New Jersey and Wyoming, require a permit.
